Hawks finally fufil potential

The Scotsman reports
Hawks supremo Peter Wright had that in mind when he spoke after his men had run riot against Selkirk, already doomed to the relegation dog-fight.

Hawks are one of the three current title aspirants and Wright said: "Our main intention was to win thADVERTISEMENTe game certainly, but even more to put out a wee statement. I don't think that we've been playing to our potential.

"We had skill set in the backs, centres that put the ball through the hands and wingers that scored tries."

Significant in pulling the whole thing together was stand-off Mike Adamson, who has been missing recently on Commonwealth Games duty.

Hawks started well by running the first penalty, with the quality of the score produced indicating it could be one-way traffic. It became reality with the fourth, bonus point, try notched in just 19 minutes. By the pause another four had arrived and Hawks led 54-0.

Hawks' shape and discipline held after the turn with six more tries dotted down and referee Gary Gordon blowing up before the scoreboard's ability to register three digits was tested.

The outcome was a blow for Selkirk who had always been competitive in previous games and had been given the goal beforehand by coach Graham Marshall of creating the kind of scrap anticipated in the relegation play-offs.

Up front they were badly outmuscled so the backline, with winger Scott Hendrie back after an opening day injury and Edinburgh's Lee Jones at centre, was never in the picture in an attacking sense.

While they never gave up trying to play rugby when in possession the Souters' efforts were not helped by having two men yellow carded - Callum Marshall in the first half and Callum Johnston after the turn.

As Hawks march on Wright had a word of sympathy for Selkirk: "I wish them a lot of luck (in the play-offs]. We want them to survive in Prem One because they play rugby."
