Glasgow Hawks underlined their title credentials with an impressive win over a battling Boroughmuir side that also contributed handsomely to an entertaining contest.

But the match proved that, while the task of home coach Fergus Pringle to build a side capable of challenging for the title remains a work in progress, his counterpart Peter Wright has already constructed a squad that will go into the post-split race for the Premiership silverware among the favourites.

And Wright believes there is more to come from a side which boasts a balance of youth and experience, as well as a potent mix of pace and ball-winning ability.

"Some of the guys have only played together eight or nine times so it takes a bit of time. But we are going well," he said. "We wanted to win, the bonus point was just that - a bit of a bonus - because we weren't sure if we would get it. Once we got into our stride, I thought we upped the tempo pretty well and scored some good tries."

After a steady start, Hawks displayed the full range of their skills, not least the ability to strike on the counter-attack.

The opener came from broken play inside their 22 when a powerful break by Bart Karalus shredded the home defence and freed Kris Hamilton to break the deadlock. Mike Adamson converted and booted a penalty before producing a superbly weighted cross-kick for Kerr Gossman to add a second try as Hawks reached the break with a 15-3 lead - Ally Warnock having landed a penalty for the hosts.

Adamson sparked another length of the field break for Craig Gossman to claim try number three and Rory MacKay bagged the bonus point after another impressive handling move at pace. Craig Gossman then sprinted over for his second try of the afternoon and Robbie Hair took the Hawks' tally to six before Harris Jones snatched a late converted consolation for the hosts.
