METCALFE RETURNS TO BONE STEELERS

2010 SQUAD: Steelers stalwart McLaren heading back to Dubai
28th Oct 2010
Former Scotland centre James McLaren has once again been included in the Xodus Steelers squad for this year’s Dubai Rugby Sevens.
McLaren, who won 30 caps for Scotland between 1999 and 2003, was a key member of the Steelers International Invitational squad in 2004 & 2007 and the VET’s team that reached the semi-finals of the Veterans 10’s tournament last year.
He picked up an injury during last year’s tournament so he’ll be looking to make up for lost time when the squad flies to Dubai on November 30.
The Xodus Steelers will compete in the Veterans 10’s tournament from December 2-4 sponsored by Xodus Group, The Famous Grouse, OKI Printing Solutions and Eden Park.
Also included in the squad today is former Edinburgh Reivers and Watsonians prop Ross McNulty and former Scotland and Heriot’s Full Back Hugh Gilmour.
The final three squad members will be announced next month.
Speaking from his home in Australia, James McLaren said today: “It’s great to be going back to Dubai with the Steelers. I’ve had some brilliant tours with them since I first went out in 2004 when Andy (Nicol) selected me and I’m delighted to still be involved”.
Xodus Steelers Squad for 2010 Dubai Sevens (more TBC):
Craig Joiner, Mark McKenzie, David Boswell, Glenn Metcalfe, Duncan Hodge, Stuart Reid, Cammy Mather, Derek Patterson, Gareth Flockhart, James McLaren, Ross McNulty, Hugh Gilmour.

2010 SQUAD: Trio set for Dubai Sevens return
20th Jul 2010
As we exclusively revealed on our twitter page yesterday three of the players that featured for the Bone Steelers at last year’s Dubai Rugby Sevens have today been named in the 2010 squad.
Glenn Metcalfe, Duncan Hodge and Stuart Reid are the first squad members for this year’s tournament to be announced.
The squad of 15 will include former Scotland internationalists who will all be revealed over the coming months, leading up to the tournament from December 2-4.
New Zealand-born Metcalfe, now a firefighter back in his native country, started his Scottish club career in 1997 by helping the new Glasgow Hawks side to the Division Two and Scottish Cup double before being signed by Glasgow Caledonians.
He went on to win 38 caps for Scotland, starring in the Five Nations Championship success in 1999 and helped the Bone Steelers reach the semi-finals of the VETS tournament at last year’s Dubai Rugby Sevens.
Duncan Hodge and Stuart Reid both played together for Scotland and it was Hodge who put the boot into England in 2000 when Scotland sensationally beat them at Murrayfield. He scored all 19 points in that match with a try, conversion and four penalties.
Stuart Reid won eight caps for Scotland as a back-row specialist between 1995 and 2000 and played club rugby for Leeds, Edinburgh and Narbonne.
Glenn Metcalfe said today: “I’m thrilled to be going back to Dubai with the Bone Steelers. Last year was an incredible tour with a great bunch of lads and hopefully we can go one step better and make the final this time around”.
Further squad members for Dubai will be announced next month.
