Short piece: STEEL AND FLOCKHART SET FOR DUEL-CODE DEBUTS
Scotland are set to hand debuts to former union cap Jon Steel and
Currie full-back Dougie Flockhart in tomorrowís European Nations Cup
tie against Wales at Bridgend. Steel won five caps for Scotland before
switching codes to join Hull KR this year and after a successful spell
in the 13-man code should become the sixth Scotland player to be capped
at both league and union since the League team was formed after the
barriers between the codes came down in 1995. He follows Alan Tait,
Andy Craig, George Graham, James McLaren and Gareth Morton, who is back
in the League squad after returning south of the border, also with Hull
KR, this year.
Flockhart, from Dumfries, has impressed in training and could follow
his appearances this summer for Scotland in the Rugby Union Under-21
World Cup in Argentina and the Student Rugby League World Cup in
Brisbane with a full cap. Also hoping to make debuts are Edinburgh
Eagles lock Dave Simm, Easterhouse Panthersí second rower Steve
Deviney, Gateshead full-back Wade Liddell, Halifax hooker Ben Fisher,
and St Albans forward Nick Surtees. The fifth debutant will become the
100th player to represent Scotland since senior rugby league
internationals began in 1995.
