Chaos as referee tells Highland and GHK to play on
Published: 28/02/2011
Northern hopefuls Caithness and Highland crashed out of the National Shield after losing out to Lasswade and GHK respectively, but not without turning in sterling performances. There was chaos at Inverness after the final whistle however.
Highland left the field after the game appeared to have ended with a 17-15 win for GHK, but to the astonishment of all at Canal Park, the referee deemed the scores were tied up at 17-17, taking the game into extra time.
“Apparently he thought our final try had been converted, but we all knew Craig Irvine had missed the kick.
“He insisted the game was a draw, so we played on, only to lose 27-17 in extra time,” said Hugh Mackintosh, the Highland coach, who while disappointed in the outcome, conceded justice had been done.
The farce continued as the Angus-based whistler had to check how long the extra period should last.
During the highly competitive tie Highland had injuries to Richard Craig and Rob Thomson which set them back, but still managed to score tries through Jamie Strachan and Kevin Brown both of which were converted by Irvine who also kicked a penalty.
“We can now concentrate on the league and our promotion prospects,” said Mackintosh.
