Glasgow Warriors recorded their first Magners League victory of 2011 tonight against Italian side Benetton Treviso.

In the absence of 17 players, six on international duty against Italy at Murrayfield tomorrow, the Glasgow young guns showed the home fans just what they can achieve by providing an optimistic and thrilling encounter.

Being their first meeting in the Magners League, and coming off the back of numerous defeats, both sides showed a strong desire to come away with the victory.

Treviso tallied up an early lead through a try from prop Michele Rizzo and a penalty from the boot of stand-off Willem De Waal. Though the Warriors had the majority of the possession throughout the half, it took 36 minutes before they showed face on the scoreboard. First Duncan Weir slotted a penalty before Jon Welsh bulldozed over the whitewash to level the scores on 40 minutes.

Glasgow re-entered the game ferociously, adding a further two tries, within the first five minutes. Lock Aly Muldowney and winger Alex Dunbar both touched down - Dunbar’s score marking his first for the Warriors. Treviso claimed another try on 48 minutes, before Duncan Weir wrapped up proceedings on 71 minutes.

Also fine displays from the Glasgow Warriors, forward back three, meant Ryan Wilson was awarded the man of the match title.

Glasgow Warriors coach Sean Lineen said: “I’m really proud of the players. Colin Gregor lead from the front and the character was outstanding.

“It takes a while in terms of belief for a squad with so many first year professionals but I think tonight they showed exactly what it means to play for Glasgow Warriors.”

The home side emerged confidently from the kick-off, placing a great deal of pressure on the visitors and assuring the territory. On numerous occasions they were camped in the Treviso 22, desperately seeking points. However, Treviso were destructive on the counter attack and managed to create a three-man overlap which allowed Rizzo to dive over in the corner. De Waal added the extras. (0-7)

Dunbar celebrates his first try for the Warriors

After a period of indiscipline on the Warriors’ part, De Waal added a further three points to the visitors’ tally. (0-10)

On 33 minutes, Tom Ryder was taken off after showing signs of discomfort in his right leg. Ryder was replaced by James Eddie who injected some extra flare into the Glasgow attack. Eddie made his presence felt and put in a fine performance throughout the rest of the game. On 36 minutes, Glasgow finally crossed the line, but were denied the score having been held up. However, Weir placed the home side’s first points on the board with a comfortable shot at goal. (3-10)

Continued momentum from the home side in the dying moments of the half was rewarded through a try from prop Jon Welsh. Weir converted to level the scores. (10-10)

Half-time score: Warriors 10-10 Treviso

The Warriors came out fired up for the second half and immediately added another try to their tally. This time lock Aly Muldowney crossed the whitewash for the Warriors. Weir converted. (15-10)

A matter of minutes later, the Warriors were powering forward in the Treviso 22 once again. This time, winger Alex Dunbar dived over for his first try since being signed as a professional. Weir missed the conversion. (22-10)

On 48 minutes, what should have been another Glasgow score ended with the visitors snatching their second try of the evening. The Warriors were camped on the Treviso five metre line, but the tight-nit Italian defence forced a turnover allowing the backs to quickly exploit the open space on the far wing. Outside centre Ludovico Nitoglia was the man to place it down and De Waal added the extras. (22-17)

The Warriors were to cross the line a further two times, through Fergus Thomson and James Eddie, but were twice denied the points on both occasions – Thomson stepped into touch and Eddie was held up. However, the penalty advantage on the second occasion, paved the way for Weir to add another three points and guarantee the victory. (25-17)

The game ended with the Warriors ferociously counter-rucking in the Treviso 22, however, when they finally turned the ball over, the clock had stopped, prompting captain Colin Gregor to kick the ball out of the park.
