THE SCOTSMAN REPORTS
George Watson's College achieved a notable rugby double at the Goldenacre Sevens on Saturday ahead of their own tournament at Myreside today, after winning the under-18 and under-16 competitions with victories over the hosts, George Heriot's School, in both finals.
The under-16 final produced a thrilling finish, with Watson's scoring a late try to draw level and then win 26-24 with the final kick of the game. At under-18 level, Watson's were more comfortable winners with a 20-5 victory.
Heriot's, however, can take much out of their progress to the final in both competitions, with wins over Howe of Fife, Stewart's-Melville College and Dollar at under-16 level, and victories against Strathallan, Merchiston and Stewart's-Melville in the under 18 age group.
Meanwhile, the final of the Brewin Dolphin Scottish Schools under-18 Plate takes place today at Murrayfield where Glasgow High School face Glenalmond College. It will be a quick turnaround for Glasgow High School who played their semi-final against Boroughmuir/James Gillespie's composite as recently as Saturday.
The match at Old Anniesland resulted in a 39-16 win for Glasgow High School and included a hat-trick of tries from winger Oliver Perry and one each from centre Gordon Currie and representative flanker Murry Cubie.
Glenalmond have had more recovery time since their 20-0 win over Dundee High School in the other semi-final, but their problem is one of readjusting to rugby in a term that is given over to hockey.
Also going ahead this week is the Brewin Dolphin under-16 Bowl final between Jedburgh Grammar School and Firrhill High School at Murrayfield. In the under-18 Bowl final, Bearsden/Douglas Academies, 8-0 winners over Elgin Academy last week in the penultimate round, play Alva Academy.
The timing of this final has yet to be determined, as is the under-16 Plate final between Gordon Schools, Huntly and Hawick High School, who defeated Kirkwall Grammar School 69-7 yesterday in the semi final.
