Played in Britain brings world's oldest rugby caps head to head
March 13 2011
As England prepared to play Scotland at Twickenham today, behind the scenes in the stadium museum two caps from the nation's first ever encounter were brought together for the first time in 140 years, following a suggestion by Played in Britain editor Simon Inglis. It was while researching Played in Glasgow that Inglis came across JW Arthur's Scottish cap at Anniesland, home of the Glasgow Academicals, and wondered if any other caps from that 1871 match survived. Only one did, that of Arthur Guillemard of England. And now thanks to the Accies and the World Rugby Museum they will be on display together for the next twelve months.
