ABERDEEN Grammar will be back in the top tier of Scottish rugby next season and they are in similarly distinguished company this weekend in the Melrose Sevens.
The Rubislaw club secured promotion to Premier 1 last week and will celebrate tomorrow by taking part in the famous tournament at The Greenyards, the spiritual home of Scottish rugby.
Grammar have traditionally struggled in the event, but have high hopes this year with an opening encounter against Glasgow Hawks. They will also be up against Scottish aristocracy such as Kelso, Currie and Ayr.
Coach Kevin Wyness will take the sevens side and said: “We are both delighted and privileged to be invited to the ground where the sevens game came into existence in 1883.
“It’s a great chance to compete with the big teams of the game
“Our record is not great at Melrose, but with a first round tie against Glasgow Hawks we have a chance to prove what we are capable of.”
He added: “It’s a wonderful chance to showcase the game of rugby, I just hope we can make a contribution to reward our supporters after all their backing.”
The Melrose Sevens tournament will include teams from Scotland as well as international sides such as Hamilton and Waikato, from New Zealand, and the newly-formed Hong Kong Scottish.
