Rugby fans are gearing up for the return of a major Glasgow sports event next month.

Top sides from across the UK and Europe will take part in the seventh Glasgow City Sevens, which last year attracted 1500 spectators.

The competition will take place at Cartha Queen’s Park’s Dumbreck Road ground on Saturday May 14 and will feature 16 clubs including defending champions Glasgow Hawks.

Also taking part will be London Wasps, Glasgow Warriors, Ospreys, Ulster Rugby and Swedish side Vikings Rugby.

Rugby sevens is a core event at the Commonwealth Games and has been identified as a key sport for development ahead of Glasgow 2014.

The tournament will be a family friendly event with a barbecue, bouncy castle and a range of other children’s entertainment.

Tournament director Brian Gervaise, said: “Every year the quality of the competition gets better and better and this year we are looking forward to welcoming sides from some of rugby’s top leagues as well as a strong local contingent.

“Rugby sevens is widely regarded as one of the most exciting sports and is played at a frantic pace, requiring great skill and touch.”

Rugby sevens will feature at the Young Commonwealth Games on the Isle of Man this summer and will be part of the 2016 Olympics in Rio.

Scotland and Glasgow Warriors centre Max Evans, said: “Sevens has played a huge part in my career so it is fantastic to see such a terrific event attracting so many big names.

“I really enjoy playing and watching sevens because it is such a fast and high scoring version of rugby and I am sure all those who head along to the Glasgow City sevens will have a great day out.”

Advance tickets costing £7.50 for adults are available from www.pslteamsports.com. Tickets cost £10 on the day and under 18s go free.
