GLASGOW'S GUTSY GAME IN DEFEAT IN FRANCE

Glasgow turned on a determined, often spirited display against Bourgoin at stade Pierre Rajon this evening, the first day of European competition. But it was not enough for them to break Scottish rugby’s Heineken Cup duck in France.
Sean Lineen, Glasgow’s assistant coach, complimented his team after the match: "The result does not reflect the whole story. We had so many problems in the build-up to the match - yet the guys came up with a performance which was bursting with guts and bravery. The young lads who came in, John Beattie and John Barclay, were absolutely immense, and we could not have asked for an ounce more effort from them.
"There is no doubt in my mind that we did enough to come away with a bonus point, but it wasn't to be. If we can show the same level of commitment during the rest of the campaign, we can make an impact."
Glasgow opened the scoring with a penalty from Dan Parks after 22 minutes. That proved to be their only points, though for much of the game they hassled the home team as well as turning the screws, especially late in both halves of the mainly scrappy contest. Glasgow also held the advantage in the lineout, with Tim Barker and Craig Hamilton mainly secure on their own ball as well as pinching several Bourgoin throws. But both teams found handling difficult in damp conditions after two heavy showers in the afternoon.
Benjamin Boyet responded with a penalty goal for the home team, but as the first half ran into injury time, with the score still 3-all, Glasgow had a golden chance to take the lead again. Boyet failed with a clearance, Hefin O’Hare ran the ball back, and when Colin Shaw was denied on the line Graeme Morrison seemed to have snapped up a try. But the video referee denied them the score.
Beattie and Shaw then had a couple of threatening runs. But when Bourgoin broke out Kevin Tkachuk was penalised on a touch judge’s call, apparently for obstruction, and Boyet kicked his second penalty to put Bourgoin ahead for the first time … more than seven minutes into added time.
Boyet was also the creator of the night's only try, making a searing break before looping a long pass for David Janin to score in 53 minutes. The stand-off added the goal points, and Janin had the chance to score a second try on a hack and chase. But Scott Lawson stayed with the wing for all of 30 metres and dived to thwart the Frenchman. The decision was refereed “upstairs,” and this time the video referee called in Glasgow’s favour.
Nicolas Carmona finished off with a penalty goal 13 minutes from the end. That score, as with Boyet’s second goal, followed a phase of Glasgow pressure, and the visitors, to their credit, kept going to the end in search of major score to snatch a bonus point.
Twice they were agonisingly close. A break by Morrison into the 22 allowed Parks the scope to kick across to the right corner, though neither Fergus Thomson nor Stuart Corsar could ground the ball, at the last gasp Morrison and Colin Gregor then combined to send Andy Henderson to within inches of the line.
