Kinsey’s Oban Blog
Very gutsy performance under difficult weather conditions. First time this season Minerva Squad have ever played together. First game vs Oban Legends, big hits early on. No prisoners taken despite average age of opponents being 3 times that of our youngest player. Quadruple from pacy Jono, 45-0 final score. Next up Keil Old boys. Minerva immediately on front foot with tries from Wright, Oki, Kinsey, Weir, MacDonald and Chris ‘the pork’ Breckenridge. Strong performances coming in from debutants J. MacMillan and B. Thomson, 66-0. Final group game vs Panmure, Minerva sustained v.good attacking play throughout despite a C.Gibson high tackle call from the ref- heads scratched on touchline? 52-0FT. Minerva vs Tech Tigers in semi’s, a team from Strath ‘uni’. One off missed tackles resulted in early lead for tech. Big wake up call needed. Great performances from experienced Pork, Oki and Harkness put pressure on youthful opponents. Huge physical hits coming in psyc’d tech out the game despite continued danger from tech star, J.Curteis. Tech were surrounded by tackles- must of thought they were playing 15 men! Some more dazzling running from the mercurial Jono Wright and disallowed blatant score from Kinsey, 29-14 FT. V Hard fought. All Anniesland final in Oban. Strong GHK team looked threatening throughout but it wasn’t enough. Chip and chase score from C. Breckenridge left GHK defence, Minerva and all spectators bemused. Great defence from Hill and Oki. Lead continued to grow thanks to hat trick from Oban’s greatest son Gavin MacDonald...or was it Chris Macdonald?! One more from Wright sealed the deal on what was a spectatular day of rugby. Team Manager Cammy Kerr, speaking to Press (possible BBC) after tournament commented, 'today wasn't just a victory for the builders, it was a victory for team spirit and rugby camaraderie, two values lacking in the modern professional game but still thriving on the fields that made the game great all those years ago.now we celebrate!' Celebrate we did.
