P J was involved in the London Rugby Rocks 7's for the HFW Wailers on Saturday in the opening tournament of the UK Super Sevens Series.
They topped their group with good wins over The Gilbert Pups and Koru Kamikaze. Wailers then progressed to the Quarter Finals where they lost in a close tie to Esher.
Super Sevens Series
June 4th 2011 will see the launch of the Super Sevens Series, featuring 9 specialist Rugby Sevens teams taking part in 3 tournaments throughout England.
The 9 ‘core teams’ are managed and run entirely by volunteers, although there is nothing amateur about the quality and skill of the teams taking part. The 9 teams, together with the 3 guest sides at each tournament, will include national-level rugby players from across the UK. The level of rugby that will be seen at each of the Series events will be of the highest calibre.
Following extensive negotiations the Series will run in conjunction with 3 specialist Sevens festivals during June and July. In its inaugural year tournaments will take place in London, Keynsham and Newquay. Teams will battle for individual tournament honours and the overall, aggregate Series title. It is the core teams’ intention to expand the Series in subsequent years.
The Super Sevens Series is a huge step forward for Rugby Sevens in the UK. Not only will the Series increase and promote public awareness of the sport, but it will also provide players with an opportunity to improve and hone their skills and assist them to hopefully going on to represent their country.
Rugby Sevens is one of the fastest growing sports in the world and the Super Sevens Series will build on the increased popularity of Rugby Sevens, which will be included in the Rio 2016 Olympics.
