Victoria Park for Speed
Hawks take to Victoria Park for their pre season speed sessions starting this Saturday at 11.00am.A well chosen venue whose name is synonymous with that most elusive of sporting qualities
Many of Scotland's greatest sprinters competed under the banner of a park that opened in 1887.Athletes like Willie Jack who made the Olympic semi finals, Mike Hildrey the Balfron Bullet 21.1 for 200m and Ronnie Whitelock who could run 9.8 for the 100 yds on bumpy grass tracks like Westerlands
Such was Victoria Park's domination in sprinting at that time they won the Scottish Sprint Relay title ten years in a row.In recent years it has been Chris Baillie a Commonwealth silver medalist in 110 m hurdles who carried the banner
However the wheels keep turning as former Hawks/GHK star and West coach George Breckenridge was recently spotted at Meadowbank watching athletics.
He was there to support daughter Anna who now competes for Victoria Park City of Glasgow. In a turn of events and with a change of roles she is coached at Scotstoun by former Hawks fitness guru Bob Tomlinson
Time to get the spikes on
