GHK match report

GHK v Allan Glens Friday 9 September Match Report

Great to have Friday night rugby back at OA - a good crowd, great atmosphere, tasty burgers, busy bar, a host of well kent faces and a decent game of rugby enjoyed by all.

The evening's entertainment began with a demonstration of rugby skills by the GHK P6s, overseen by their coaches who were, in turn, kept in line by Louise!

When the main event got underway, GHK wasted little time in making their intentions known by handling from the off and, with only 3 minutes on the clock, Tony Herron benefited by going for the first try following some slick handling. With GHK looking to run at every opportunity a penalty was quickly taken allowing Andy Fleming to find the gap and score for 10-0 after 12 minutes.

Allan Glens took advantage of a penalty conceded by GHK by kicking to 5 metres and successfully driving over for 10-5.

A well worked scrum move from near Allan Glens line brought GHK their next score through Mikey Borthwick with a good conversion from Andy Fleming for 17-5. GHK came close on a couple of occasions near the end of the half but the only other score was a penalty for Glens. Half time 17-8 and everything still to play for.

GHK first missed then kicked a penalty chance to push the margin back up to 12 points before they scored a similar try to Allan Glens earlier effort with a drive from a line out with Mikey gaining his second try, securing the bonus point at 25-8.

GHK's defence had proved equal to most of Allan Glens attacks but good continuity from Glens saw their winger go over in the corner with the conversion making it 25-13 with still 20 minutes remaining.

GHK chose to kick 2 penalties to make the result secure with only one further try to make the final score GHK 37 Allan Glens 15.

Overall, a good performance from GHK against a Glens side who stuck to their task and would have been in closer contention had it not been for excellent GHK defence at almost all times.

It was great to have Cammy Little out for his last night of freedom - congratulations Cammy on the following day's nuptials - and to welcome the groom's entourage from far and wide, including Murray Wallace all the way from Boulder.

The SOBs played a memorable set in the bar afterwards to round off a fun filled day especially for those who had put in a shift earlier through at Kilspindie.

With Glasgow Accies winning both their opening fixtures, next week's derby across the fence at New Anniesland takes on an even bigger billing now being a table top clash as well as the first league meeting between the clubs for some 15 years. As previously posted here, Accies are hosting a pre-match lunch at which we're taking tables so if you'd like to join us contact Ewan Cameron or myself. Failing that, it would be great to see every GHK guy who has ever enjoyed playing Accies come out and lend their support to the team this Saturday. You know it makes sense!
