Warriors lose to Treviso

GLASGOW WARRIORS 13-15 BENETTON TREVISO
Friday, 23 September 2011
It was an adept defensive effort from Benetton Treviso tonight which denied Glasgow Warriors a second consecutive victory in the RaboDirect PRO12.
The Warriors managed to maintain the majority of the possession throughout the game, but an accurate kicking game from the Italian stand-off, Kristopher Burton, and a number of missed opportunities from the hosts meant they were unable to tip the score line in their favour.

Glasgow Warriors head coach, Sean Lineen, said: “It’s incredibly disappointing to have lost tonight. The crowd wanted us to win so much.
“It’s not that the effort isn’t there or that the players don’t want it.
“There was a lot of missed opportunities tonight and we didn’t handle Treviso’s game plan well. I would have to ask our players if a lot of the decisions they made they would make again. However, Burton controlled the game brilliantly from ten and took his chances.
“We must just keep learning, but the lows are very low and we’re not feeling good right now. We really wanted to deliver a good result for our fans, and it just didn’t happen.”
The Warriors managed to gain a seven point lead within the opening eleven minutes of the game before Treviso gained the upper hand with three successful shots at goal and a two point lead at halftime.
In the second half Glasgow came back out with all guns blazing, showing desire and promise in attack, but Treviso refused to relent in defence. Before the match concluded a series of kicks where exchanged taking the score to 13-15.
Read on for tonight’s run of play:
On four minutes Treviso had the chance to open the scoring with a penalty from the half-way line. However, stand-off Kristopher Burton's, strike sailed off target.
Glasgow stand-off, Duncan Weir took his chance to open the scoring on 11 minutes after Tom Ryder broke down the wing and delivered the offload on his shoulder. Weir converted his try. 7-0
Treviso responsed quickly to the try when flanker, Manoa Vosawai was offered a great deal of open space taking the hosts dangerously closer to Glasgow's line. On 17 minutes their efforts were rewarded when the Warriors gave away a frivolous penalty by the posts. Burton was successful with his second attempt. 7-3
Straight away Duncan Weir was offered a chance to respond, but his strike from distance was wayward and the scoreboard remained unchanged.
Some 24 minutes into the game and Duncan Weir fancied his chances at the uprights from 55 metres. However, what looked like a powerful and accurate strike sailed wide.
Off the restart Treviso were given another chance at the posts after hooker Pat MacArthur was sent to the bin. Burton’s successful strike took the score to 7-6. With MacArthur's conviction in mind Sean Lineen was forced to switch flanker Chris Fusaro with replacement hooker, Finlay Gillies.
Treviso managed to batter their way towards the Glasgow line, getting within a matter of inches to the whitewash. However, a Glasgow turnover and a punt from scrum-half, Henry Pyrgos eased the pressure from the hosts on 33 minutes.
After Glasgow were penalised for having their hands in the ruck, Treviso were gifted the opportunity to take the lead before they went in for the break. Kristopher Burton was successful with his third attempt and the score at halftime was 7-9.
Halftime: Glasgow Warriors 7 - 9 Benetton Treviso
On 44 minutes Weir took the first points of the half and Glasgow back into the lead. The penalty also saw Treviso captain, Antonio Pavanello sin binned. 10-9
Burton responed on 50 minutes swinging the scoreboard back in Treviso's favour. 10-12
Captain, Robert Harley slipped through the Treviso defence opening up an attack for the Warriors, however with limited support and the visitors closing Harley and Aramburu down to touch. Treviso quickly snuffed out any danger.
Just after the hour mark Duncan Weir was given a second opportunity to kick at goal and bring the Warriors back into the lead, however his kick was shaky and unsuccessful.
Replacement stand-off Scott Wight, struck his first attempt at goal well and took the Warriors back into the lead on 67 minutes. 13-12
Treviso managed to gain the upper hand once again on 72 minutes when Burton struck a comfortable drop goal. 13-15
With two minutes to go Wight missed his chance to bring the Warriors back into the lead.
