Glasgow Academy have been crowned champions in the under-18 leg of the Glasgow Warriors Schools 7s (sponsored by Greenbelt), beating Carrick Academy 38-19.
The competition, which took place today at Scotstoun Stadium in the blazing Glasgow sunshine was the second leg of a new two leg competition introduced to raise the profile of schools rugby 7s in the west; to develop the skills of young players; and to strengthen relationships between schools in the surrounding area and Glasgow Warriors.
The High School of Glasgow were the victors in the first leg (under-16) of the tournament which took place last Wednesday (21 September).
Over the two weeks, some 24 teams from 17 schools competed.
Regional Development Manager for Glasgow North, Kenny Brown, said: “We have had a real mix of teams playing in this competition: from public schools to state schools through schools who are fairly new to rugby and sevens, and established rugby schools.
“We introduced the tournament to bring some additional competitive opportunities in at the beginning of the rugby season and to raise the profile of school sevens.
“We’re hoping to run the tournament on an annual basis and grow the competition.”
“Moreover, we assigned one Warriors player to each team to give them some face time with the school players and offer some additional coaching.”
The players offered tips and advice to help their assigned schools stake their bid for the silverware. The trophies were then presented to the winners by Glasgow Warriors forwards, Rob Harley (under-16) and James Eddie (under-18).
Regional Development Manager for Glasgow South, Glen Tippet, added: “The standard of rugby played over the last two weeks has been really good. We introduced this competition to raise the profile of 7s at school level and to help develop the skills of young players.
“We hope to make this an annual event and a competition that the schools all get really excited about. It’s fantastic that we can use the facilities at Scotstoun and build on the relationship we have with the Warriors.
“Also we want to give a big thank you to Greenbelt who sponsored the tournament.”
