Glasgow Hawks 19-7 Dundee HS
Quite a sedate afternoon for all involved with Hawks 2's , nice contrast to recent events!!!! Welcome return to the hallowed turf of Kelvinside's Balgray top pitch. Nostalgia for old boys Aubrey Horton and Mark Taylor .
Tough task against a strong Dundee team but met head on from the start. With weather deteriorating Hawks stuck to simple game plan and gradually wore down an abrasive Dundee pack.
Real combative performance by front 5 , hard yards getting over gain line by Hamish King and Fiji John and steadying influence of the old guy at 7 gave great platform . Defence worked hard enough that Dundee were left trying long range penalties.
After 30mins , good line-out and hard yards over gain line allowed Sean Murray to exploit space and mismatch ,with a slightly less mobile prop and finish well from 40m. With rain thundering down never going to be a high scoring game and HT reached at 5-0.
Its a tough one when you have a very positive HT and the opposition then score in the first minute! Poor k.o receipt and slack fringe defence allowed Dundee back row to break up middle and beat the last defenders to score under posts. 5-7.
Couldn't ask for a better response as Hawks dominated rest of game. From mid-field scrum Oki attacked gain line, Robert Wilson ran best line of game to glide past Dundee midfield and great 2 on 1 to Tails to finish. Aubrey Horton conv, 12-7.
Pressure continued and forwards got in on act with repetitive drives at heart of Dundee defence, ended in Fiji John breenging over from his umpteenth ball carry. Aubrey conv 19-7, 60mins.
Last 20mins saw several bonus point chances blown and some frantic defending as Dundee tried to rescue the game. But solid approach resulted in deserved win and increased confidence for weeks ahead.
