Hawick 8 - 23 Glasgow Hawks: Frail Hawick undone by Hawks

HAWICK, needing a win to break their duck this season, failed in an unimpressive performance, writes Atholl Innes.

The club is still on the lookout for a new coach, but yesterday gave the fans little hope for the second half of the season.

In a battle of nerves at the foot of the Premier 1 table, and in front of the smallest Mansfield Park crowd for years, Hawick got off to the perfect start with a Gary Johnstone penalty in ten minutes.

However, they were soon showing the jitters and George Hunter was driven over for a try which Mike Martin converted for a 7-3 lead.

Martin popped over two penalties and seven minutes from the interval, Ross Miller found space on the right to run in unchallenged for a try. Martin added the goal points for a 20-3 interval lead.

In the second half, Hawick played with more aggression, and after Hawks’ Bart Karalus was yellow carded, John Coutts pounced for a try.

But Hawks sealed the points with a Peter Jericevich penalty.

Hawick were confirmed as the bottom-placed club, and the new coach, whoever takes over, faces a mammoth task to restore the spirit in the New Year.
