Currie 2nds 33- 14 Glasgow Hawks
Malleny Park not for the faint hearted as 2012 started with a bang , crash and wallop!! Hawks right out the blocks from kick off, pressure on Currie defence allowed Louis Kinsey to score opportunistic try in first minute. Converted by the svelte looking Chris Breckenridge. 7-0. Currie had been in good form all season and came right back into it. Powerful drives by back row and support by centre gave quick response under posts. 7-7 after 5mins. Hawks playing with great tempo and causing panic in Currie defence, couple of chances not taken before great break by Davide, follow up by Franco and eventually Sean Murray in space stood up last defenders for great score. Brecko conv, 14-7.
Quality physical battle ensued for rest of half, and Currie inched back in it with Hawks errors and couple of iffy ref decisions. Pen for midfield offside , then Stu Low penalised for stealing ball when on feet (!) made it 14-13.
Scrum dominance had switched back and forward but as half wore on Currie got upper hand and in injury time, made mess of Hawks scrum near line and no.8 plunged over . 14-20 HT.
Needed a good start but Currie dominated possession for first 10mins, Hawks defending well until Hoggy adjudged to have "tackled dangerously" and yellow carded. Pen made it 14-23. Massive defensive scrum effort held line intact but a wicked bounce from chip over midfield allowed Currie to get touch first, 14-28. Looked like Hawks defence had it covered before ball did its worst.
As Hawks chased game and got more possession intensity went off the scale. Couple of skirmishes resulted in yellow for Currie replacement, then yellow for Milto Hamilton , after another Hawks breakdown infringement(!). Inconsistent decision making at breakdown had made it difficult for both sets of players. Hawks created chances as half progressed but lack of composure kept Currie line intact.
The first hour gave us a lot of bang and crash but the wallop resulted in a tense last 10mins and Hawks playing with 13 for that period. Despite a heroic backs to wall defence, Currie managed to sneak over for their bonus point try in 5min of injury time. Final score 33-14.
