In May 2009, The Glasgow Hawks Sports Trust was granted charity status.

Below is an outline of the Youth & Community Programme that we deliver. If you would like to make a donation to the Trust, please use the following Gift Aid Form and send it to our office at Old Anniesland:   GIFT AID FORM

The Trust's specific aim is to create an all inclusive Community Club which embraces West Glasgow (as defined by Scottish Rugby) and which introduces and developes rugby in the 15 primary and 3 secondary schools in the area. In recognition of the youth & community programme introduced since 2009, Culture & Sport Glasgow's Clubmark accreditation has been awarded to Glasgow Hawks. This scheme recognises sports clubs that are committed to providing an effective, safe and inclusive environment for their members, especially children, and the local community.

Primary School Rugby

At present we deliver rugby to both boys and girls in classes from primary 4 to primary 7 at 15 schools in the West of the city, during curriculum time. With the help of Active School Co-ordinators Andy Young and Louise Keating we are able to offer the schools the chance to participate in festivals and take part in after school clubs.

Secondary School Rugby

Delivery of Secondary School Rugby is the main project for our Hawks Community team. We have made great strides in getting rugby into Knightswood Secondary, St Thomas Aquinas Secondary and Drumchapel Secondary School. This is delivering the sport to a new audience and will hopefully get some new players into the Hawks midi teams.

The youth section continues to grow under the Leadership of Graeme Davidson. The teams train / play on a Sunday and are always on the lookout for new players. This season we will be running teams at under 13, under 14, under 15, under 16 and under 17/18 age groups.

Other Activities

Throughout the year the Hawks community team run a variety of other youth programmes such as summer camps, pre match clinics, coaching updates, overseas development trips to name but a few.

Expansion of Youth & Community Programme

During Summer 2011, we ran a successful pilot project sponsored by Glasgow Airport Flightpath Fund which provided coached rugby activities for youths aged 12-15 years old who live in the areas of West Glasgow (Drumchapel, Knightswood and Scotstoun). These coaching activities take place in the local community and, working with Glasgow Life and the local Police, are supported by a series of workshops addressing issues of drugs/alcohol misuse, gang culture and pursuing a healthy lifestyle.

Sessions are organised and delivered by coaches and players from Glasgow Hawks rugby club. These sessions are open to all young people who live in the local community, however there is also liaison with local community Police to identify the young people at greatest risk of being involved in gang culture and violent offending.

As a result of the success of the pilot project, it is now our intention to incorporate these activities into our expanded Youth & Community Programme.

Initial engagement focuses on rugby coaching, however, where relevant, we will provide opportunities for competition between youths from the different communities. All participants are required to attend workshops as part of the programme.

The fundamental aim of this part of the programme is to engage young people in positive, structured team activity, whilst educating and informing them of the dangers of gang culture and the positive effects of leading a healthy, safe lifestyle.

Competitive events will be hosted at Glasgow Hawks rugby club at Old Anniesland. We hope to organise short games as an 'opener' to home matches in the Scottish Premier One league.

Our original programme specifically benefits children and young people in the primary and secondary schools in West Glasgow. It is also intended to recruit, train and develop coaches and volunteers to support the increase in growth and it is hoped that they will come from these community areas which will encourage parents and others to participate in our programme.

Our additional project directly benefits young people aged 12-15 years old who may currently be 'on the margins' of their local society. We also know that engaging this group in positive meaningful activity in the evenings will bring benefit to the wider community as local people will see a reduction in gang style activity and a reduction in the perception of the level of youth disorder in their area.
