Glasgow Hawks 28-05 Dundee HSFP

AT HALF-TIME the talk was of Hawks being back to their best as they led 25-0, having dominated in every phase of the game. By full-time the sparse Old Anniesland crowd were left wondering if it had been a false dawn.

It really was a game of two halves. In the first, Hawks scored three tries of a completely different nature. A third minute interception and romp from half-way by Murray Strang started the scoring, a catch and drive at the line-out put Greg Francis over after half-an-hour, and on the stroke of half-time prop Nick Cox burst over to touch down.

Mike Adamson rattled ten points from two conversions and two penalties, but the second period proved an anti-climax for Hawks who struggled to get into the Dundee half. But for all their territorial advantage, Dundee managed to breach the Hawks defence only once - Dougie McLaren nipping round a line-out.

With Alan Dymock travelling to Ireland as Edinburgh’s 23rd man and Ross Lemon and James Bracher unavailable, Barry Jones made a welcome return to 1st XV rugby at scrum half after an injury ravaged season last year. There was also a spot on the bench for Danny Levison who has been showing great form with the second XV.

For the second week running Dundee gave themselves an impossible task after an error strewn and disjointed first half including another interception try.

Glasgow Hawks 24, Dundee 0

Although they tightened up their game in the second half to win it 5 – 3 it was still an uncharacteristically misfiring Dundee side that gifted turnovers and picked wrong options while never looking like troubling a Hawks defence who had obviously done their homework and nullified Dundee’s traditional strengths.

Dougie McLaren’s well taken try from a neat variation of a lineout offered a brief flicker of hope early in the second half but overall Dundee lacked a cutting edge and found the Hawks defence in their own 22 equal to everything the visitors tried.
