Hawks Open with a Win

Glasgow Hawks 12 Watsonians 9

After four pre season victories played on sunny days and good firm surfaces Hawks were faced with a deluge that started five minutes into the first half and poured down for the remainder of the match. The greasy surface made handling very difficult and at times it was like trying to pick an orange pip out of a soapy bath. Needless to say there were countless handling errors by both sides throughout the game but it was still pretty exciting. The try scoring opportunities were few and far between and it was always going to be decided on penalties. Last season this would have been a problem for Hawks because it was their Achilles heel but Mike Adamson has returned to the Club and he slotted all four, two in each half, with the final kick being the second last movement of the game.
Watsonians also had an excellent goal kicker in scrum half Brian Walls who scored all their points.
Over the piece Hawks deserved to win as they had the bulk of the possession and certainly most of the territorial advantage. They perhaps lacked a cutting edge but it was never going to be easy in the weather conditions and they were certainly happy to secure the points and move on to the game at Biggar on Saturday
