National League roundup

Scottish Club & Community Rugby Website - HAWKS SORE TO TOP OF RBS NATIONAL LEAGUE

National league leaders, Glasgow Hawks, showed how desperate they are to be back in the top-flight division next year with a comfortable 27-13, bonus-point, victory over Selkirk at Philiphaugh in the Borders today.

The Glasgow side are now the only unbeaten team in Scotland’s second top division having matched their opponent’s winning-run in the opening month of the season.

Glasgow Hawks head coach, Jamie Dempsey, said: “It’s very good to come down here and get a win. All credit to Selkirk though, as we had to dig deep at the end to assure the victory.

“We had a lot of experience on the bench who could come on, make an impact and keep up the momentum.”

From the word go Selkirk were never really in the match. They were unable to secure the first kick-off and within a matter of minutes Hawks’ scrum-half Hadden MacPherson emerged from a pile of bodies claiming the first-try of the match. MacPherson along with his half-back partner Andy White commanded the whole game very well.

Throughout the remainder of the first-half neither team were able to cause any real threat, exchanging only a penalty a piece from Hawks stand-off Mike Adamson and Selkirk scrum-half Michael McVie.

The second-half was a closer affair with Selkirk injecting a bit more creativity into their attack, but ultimately too many forced and unforced errors saw them give away the win.

Scoring in the second-half for Glasgow Hawks was replacement prop Callum Kerr, winger Tony Herron and centre Tom Preece, who scored the bonus-point try at the death. Adamson converted two of the four tries. For Selkirk McVie added another penalty and converted, replacement winger Rory Banks’ and the hosts only, try.

Elsewhere in the RBS National League Hawick beat Biggar at Mansfield Park, 71-6; Jed-Forest lost to Hamilton, 35-14, at Riverside Park; Watsonians won at Hughenden, 34-19, against Hillhead/Jordanhill and Stewart’s Melville beat Kelso 43-31 at Inverleith.
