Both teams had already notched up five point victories against Whitecraigs in earlier cup games. The outcome of this game would therefore determine which club went into the west section semi finals.
Hawks put out a near full strength team but due to injury, illness and unavailability CQP were forced to radically alter the team line up which had comprehensively beaten Ardrossan the previous week. No fewer than six new faces appeared in the CQP line up with three others occupying different positions from the ones they had filled a week earlier.
The opening quarter saw Hawks having most of the possession but the CQP central defence holding steady. CQP lost Chris Donnelly to the sin bin after nineteen minutes and three minutes later Hawks opened their account with a try which came from a Hawks scrum near the CQP line. The ball was fed out to the right and Ross Millar went over.
Six minutes later Hawks scored again this time courtesy of Callum Kerr as a result of a well orchestrated forward drive. Neither of these tries was converted.
Just before half time the Hawks number 9 was sin binned and soon after CQP got on the scoreboard as a result of a successful Wayne Burrows penalty in front of the posts.
CQP had played well in the first forty minutes and defended well throughout.
HT CQP 3 HAWKS 10.
With only five minutes of the second half played Hawks pushed the score up to seventeen three as a result of a try scored by McFarlane and converted by Jack Steele. Two minutes later Steele was yellow carded for repeated offside.
On the fifty minute mark a kick through by Hawks saw CQP fail to gather the ball and Gormley was able to score in the corner
Only a few minutes later and a high kick deep into the CQP half eluded the CQP full back and allowed Hawks to push the score up to 29-3 with McFarlane getting the touchdown and Gormley converting
This was followed by another Hawks score close to the posts by their number one. The try was again converted by Gormley
The final Hawks try came when CQP were attempting to run the ball out of defence and the pass was intercepted by a Michael Martin positioned in the CQP line. This try was converted to move the score to 43-3 .Just before the final Hawks try CQP had brought on Johnny Campion at scrum half and taken off Alec Boyle.
The above may suggest that the game was one sided but several of the Hawks tries came from isolated CQP mishaps. On the day CQP paid dearly for a few mistakes. It would have been very interesting to see how the game would have unfolded if CQP had been in a position to field the same team as the previous week.
FINAL SCORE CQP 3 HAWKS 43
Hawks will now play Marr at home in the semi final cup tie next weekend but CQP will not have a game until the following Saturday when they travel to Greenock hoping for another victory to keep themselves at the top of the Championship A league
