Melrose Roundup

Scotland 7s players had some valuable game time at the Melrose 7s today ahead of the Emirates Airline Glasgow 7s and eighth leg of the HSBC Sevens World Series in three weeks time (3-4 May).

Some 10 of the players were playing with their pro-player drafted clubs, as well as recent Hong Kong Bowl winners, Scott Wight, Mark Bennett, Finlay Gillies, Lee Jones and James Eddie, turning out for today’s winners Glasgow Warriors.

Perhaps the most impressive Scotland 7s players, with the clubs, were the Edinburgh Accies players, Scott Riddell, Chris Dean and Alex Glashan, who helped their team reach the final for the first time since 1949.

Riddell impressed
Riddell, showed his professional prowess, playing in every minute of the five matches that the Raeburn Place side competed in. He also touched down against Kelso, Clermont Auvergne and Melrose. Glashan scored tries against Watsonians, Clermont and Melrose and Dean against Watsonians.

Michael Maltman (Heriot’s) and Neil Herron (Glasgow Hawks) put in impressive shifts with their teams. Herron scored a brace and showed his power in a match that saw Glasgow Hawks almost edge Clermont Auvergne to victory in their first round tie. Clermont won 26-21. Maltman touched down against Boroughmuir and USA Tigers.

The USA Tigers match was a fantastic and resilient win for the Goldenacre team, in round one, as this team is the USA 7s development team. Heriot’s won, 29-28.

Maltman and Herron powerful
All Glasgow Warriors’ recent sevens caps scored tries throughout the day with Lee Jones topping the try-tally with five. Scott Wight also scored 13 conversions today and finished the day with a nice touch, scoring Glasgow Warriors last try in the final at a ground he is synonymous with.

Also turning out from Scotland 7s and scoring today were James Johnstone (Hawick), Gregor (Gala) and Lewis Young (Jed-Forest), Mark Robertson (Melrose) and Colin Gregor (Glasgow Hawks).
