Hawks left it late to tie the scores and draw with Gala, in an incredibly entertaining match at Old Anniesland.
As in the opening 3 matches Hawks started brightly and really took the match to Gala, they were battering the visitor’s line when the ball was passed to Ross Miller who juggled the ball before James Gormley caught it and dropped over for the try. It was 20 minutes before Ally MacLay took the team further ahead and with Scott Wight goaling. The Glasgow side entered the second quarter 12-0 ahead but lost an early penalty after the restart but then marched up the park to register their third try. However, the kick off came and Hawks conceded a couple of penalties which kept the gap at 10 points and Gala clung on.
A yellow card to Stephen Findlay in 32 minutes was a blow to the home side but gall has started to assert their authority on the match. A try from Gala prop Ewan McQuillan was deserved following a passage of play where Gall turned the screw on the home side. At half-time Hawks advantage had slipped to 19-17.
The second half started off in cracking fashion for the “Braw Lads” as they drove the Hawks defence backwards. In 42 minutes stand-off McLean was over for a second try which was easily converted by Scott. Before Hawks could pull themselves together. Gala had collected the ball after the kick-off and marched into the home territory where resistance seemed futile. Gala were now 12 points ahead and had the upper hand.
Home supporters were given a glimpse of hope when Ross Miller secured a try bonus in 50 minutes bat as Gala swept back up the field Hawks cause seemed lost when Gala replacement Chris Weir went over in the pavilion end and set Gala up with a 14 point lead.
The game clock was running down and Glasgow worked their way into the Gala 22, but with 7 minutes remaining it looked a forlorn hope as they closed in on the visitor’s line. In 74 minutes Glasgow pro, Jon Welsh went over from close range and with Wight goaling the difference was 7 and Hawks appeared to have salvaged a losing bonus. Hawks however weren’t prepared to settle. They took the match by the scruff of the neck and doggedly worked their way deep up to the line. Haddon McPherson went over for the6th hawks try and with Wight converting the scores were tied.
As the match finished, Hawks seemed to get a 7th, but the referee called it for a double motion after the tackle. Final score 38-38 and Hawks gain 3 points.
